DANNY BOHN GETS CAREER FIRST WIN, JEREMY GERSTNER IS 2017 SOUTHERN MODIFIED RACING SERIES CHAMP

ROUGEMONT, N.C. – Danny Bohn of Freehold, N.J. earned his career-first victory in the 75-lap Southern Modified Racing Series (SMRS) Saturday night at Orange County Speedway. While Bohn celebrated the win, Jeremy Gerstner of Wesley Chapel, Fla. was celebrating the series championship after a third-place finish.

Gerstner entered the race with a mere five-point advantage over Brandon Ward of Winston Salem, the duo traded the lead and even traded paint early in the event racing for the top spot. Ward led the most laps early, but on lap 53 sixth-starting Danny Bohn rolled into the lead.

Bohn, who earlier in the evening won the Precision Built Spindles pole award, swept the night with the victory. He becomes the sixth-different winner this season on the SMRS and the ninth overall winner in the two-year history of the tour.

Gerstner and Ward battled early not only for the lead but with the championship in hand. Gerstner and Ward both gained bonus points for leading laps and as the early laps unfolded Ward lead the most laps bringing the drivers to even with bonus points.

However, the late laps proved to be the end of a great run for Ward this season as he faded to a 10th-place finish while Gerstner maintained third – securing the championship. Gerstner won once this year – July 1st at Hickory. Ward won four times this year end ended second in the season-long standings.

In winning the championship Gerstner also earned a guaranteed starting spot in the 15th Annual North South Shootout. That 125-lap, $10,000-to-win race is November 4 at Concord Speedway.
